VEGETABLE TANNED: this is the preserving process using natural plant material. There is evidence that this process was used as much as 4,000 years ago. This leather is used in stamping, embossing, and wet forming.
HERMANN OAK TANNERY of St. Louis, MO. cow sides in 4/5 oz., 6/7 oz. 8/9 oz., WICKET & CRAIG of AMERICA, cow sides in English Bridle 10/12 oz., Cow imports 2/3 oz., 3/4 oz., 5/6 oz., 2/3 oz. goat, kangaroo, sheep skiver, 12/14 oz. harness russet, black harness, and sole bend.

CHROME TANNED: this process uses chromium salts and has only been employed with the advent of the petro-chemical industry. circa:1900. Upholstery, garment, and accessories items normally will be made of chrome tanned leather. The natural color of the leather after the tanning process is a grey-blue. The colors are added at the tannery. Suede is leather and it is chrome tanned. It has merely had the top smooth surface split off. We have it in chap and garment weight. 1/2 oz. velvet pig suedes, deer suedes, deer chamois, variety of upholstery leather, linings, sheep, goat, horse, deer, elk, buffalo, and moose.

LATIGO: Is an American term for cattle hide preserved using a combination of alum and gambier. This type of leather is best used for saddlery. It has an oily feel and is available in burgandy and black 6/7 oz., 7/8 oz., 8/9 oz.

EXOTICS: stingray, python, ostrich knee, and lizard.

HAIR ON HIDES: New Zealand sheep, cow, goat, slunk, raccoon, skunk, oppossum, fox, wolf etc...

RAWHIDE: it is called this for a reason. It is skin that has yet to be tanned. It works well for drum heads and lampshades. The pioneers used it as windows and for tying fence posts together. The finer rawhides, usually sheep, known as "parchment" or "velum" were used in many religious manuscripts and diplomas. It also gives a good sound to a banjo. Cow sides, bleached and natural. Cow bends, kangaroo, horse, goat, sheep, deer, and buffalo. Hair on rawhide in goat makes a great tribal drum head. We have it as well.

CRAFTAIDS: transparent plastic sheets with a design raised on one side so it may be laid on leather and rubbed, impressing the design onto the leather. We have a link where you may have your own craftaid made.
